An introduction to the Chamber Ensemble

18 December, 2015

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields are very pleased to announce that Tomo Keller has been appointed as Leader, following the a vote from its membership. Keller has been a frequent guest leader and performer with the Academy and its Chamber Ensemble since 2012.

Academy Music Director Joshua Bell comments: “I’ve really enjoyed working alongside Tomo Keller, and the appointment of such a brilliant violinist as Leader is a real coup for the Academy. He will bring vast experience and wonderful musicianship to the role, and I can’t wait to begin working with him again.”

On receiving the news of his appointment, a delighted Tomo Keller remarked: “I grew up with Academy of St Martin in the Fields recordings, as a kid always wondering about their name. Becoming a member and leader now is a dream come true. It is a great challenge and privilege and I'm looking forward to many wonderful and exciting concerts!”

This appointment comes after a comprehensive search following the departure of Ken Sillito in February 2012. Academy Chief Executive Gabriel van Aalst comments: “Tomo has proven himself to be an adaptable, musically sensitive player who is as popular with audiences and promoters as he with our players, which was clear from the overwhelming support for his appointment.”

Keller will take up his position as Leader of the Academy for the recording of four Beethoven Piano Concertos with Inon Barnatan and Alan Gilbert to be released next year.

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble’s annual North American tour was anything but ordinary.  After sharing their incomparable rendition of Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings on all prior visits, this time they brought a mixed ensemble of winds and strings to offer the glorious Schubert Octet for the first time in memory. The Cleveland Plain Dealer called the performance “a model of live music-making,” and the Dallas Morning News praised them as “an ensemble of first-rate musicians, technically superb, generously expressive, and obviously enjoying themselves. Everything was nicely buoyed and lovingly phrased.”

The Academy St. Martin returns with the Schubert Octet between October 20 – November 3, 2016 (very few dates remaining), and will also tour in October 2017.
